Exciting and spectacular baseball can be difficult to find, however in a thrilling final match between the Solingen Alligators and Therwil Flyers, pitchers let their arms put on a display. Nils Hartkopf for Solingen faced off against the Flyers SP Hideori Oshima, and what these two players offered the crowd kept them on edge. Just 35 and 34 batters stepped into the box for each team, respectively, with less than a third of which reaching base. Seven hits were tallied for Therwil, and the same number for the Alligators in victory: but it was the home run by Evan Porter in the fifth inning that ultimately decided the game. In the seventh inning J.B. Tucker took over on the mound and left the Alligators seeing red with two 1-2-3 innings to keep the game exciting. On the brink, Nils Hartkopf returned to the mound for the last offensive inning for the Flyers. Three hits in a row loaded the bases, and the makings of a win for the Flyers were in the air. The audience had probably already been set mentally for extra innings or a second game, but Hartkopf spoiled the rally by K’ing the next three batters, taking the game and securing the tournament victory.
The individual awards went to J.B. Tucker (best batter), Maxim Shevshenko (best pitcher) and Nils Hartkopf (most valuable player).
The Alligators will now participate in the final tournament in September, where the four winners of the qualifiers played this week and the two last place finishers of the two A-Pool tournaments played last week. The top two will move into the A-Pool. The six participants are divided into two groups. In addition to Savigny (FRA) and Rouen (FRA) as the A-Pool "Losers" and the Solingen Alligators, the other qualifying teams include: the Czech Republic (Brno), Russia (Moscow) and Croatia (Karlovac). The venue of the games in September has not yet been determined.
