The early game between the Flyers and Academica de Coimbra went seven innings in favor of the Swiss. But as one-sided as the outcome sounds, the game was rather close. Although the Flyers were up 8-3 after two innings, the Portuguese showed themselves to be up to the challenge and made it 9:6 in the bottom of the sixth. Rather amazing in this game, however, was the high occurrence of errors by both sides. The Portuguese home side ultimately made the fatal mistakes, as Therwil pulled away to win 16:6, stealing an early victory.

A second game of the day didn’t quite follow the anticipated script. The underdog of the tournament, the Oslo Pretenders, showed off a completely different side, and for a while it seemed as though the Scandinavians could beat the Poles. After the fourth inning, the Norwegians were 1:5 in front and were enjoying the lead. Then the Devil’s caught fire, with hit after hit, while the swings of the Norwegian bats ironically landed directly in the gloves of their opponent. The final result was 14:8 in favor of the Poles.

The conclusion of the day again today put the Solingen Alligators against Team Russia # 42. Andre Hughes and Andrey Filippov faced each other on the mound, with both delivering excellent appearances. Dustin Hughes was the lone base runner to cross the plate in the first four innings. The score was 0-1 in favor of Germany after four innings in a thrilling matchup. Then followed the decisive inning of the game from Solingen’s perspective, Evan Porter and Moritz Buttgereit knocked a pair of hits, and Wulf was hit, and Hartkopf took a patient approach at the plate for the RBI-walk. Dustin Hughes came to the plate with the more bases loaded, and managed a three-run double, striking a dagger into the opponent. The game remained exciting, however, as the pitcher from Russia gave no further ground. In the eighth inning Andre Hughes made room for Sebastian Bernards on the mound. The lone run for the Russians came in this inning, just as one more was tallied in the bottom half by the Alligators. The final score 1:6 didn’t do the game justice, as the excitement was maintained throughout the evening. Yet the home side is on to the finals against the Flyers.
